You know about bird watching, but what about “tree watching”? In this book, Nancy R. Hugo shows you that there’s much more to a tree than what meets the eye. By looking at 10 well-known types of trees, Hugo opens up the world of trees, including their leaves and flowers. You may think tree watching is easier than bird watching. However, “trees can be difficult to track”, Hugo writes in his book. She shows you how to look beyond the leaves to find some trees’ “secrets”.
Written in easy-to-understand language, Hugo offers readers ways to kick-start a “tree-watching” hobby. The book also features many amazing pictures, including close-ups (特写) and whole tree shots.
Have you ever wanted to see the world through the “eyes” of plants? Living as a Naturalist invites you into this world. Natural history might seem like a difficult subject, but this book makes natural history attractive and easy to understand.
Liu uses flowers and plants as an entry point and shows readers how to learn natural history in our daily lives to make our lives more enjoyable.
The book brings together traditional Chinese ideas on knowing about animals and nature with information on famous natural history people in the West. This is all done with a humorous writing style. The book also includes beautiful pictures of plants and animals.
The Paris Olympic Games took place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, with the Paralympic Games (残奥会) from August 28 to September 8. Unlike in previous (先前的) years, both the Olympic and Paralympic share the same torch design.
The torch, 70cm in height, is made of lightweight shiny steel and stands out for its champagne color (香槟色). The bottom part has a special design that looks like the River Seine, along which the opening ceremony was held.
Mathieu Lehanneur, the designer of the torch, shared that he drew inspiration from three themes of the 2024 Paris Olympics—equality, water, and peace. He explained, “For the first time in its history, the torch for the 2024 Paris Olympics has a perfect balance between non-disabled athletes and para-athletes, which shows us what equality really means. ”
Equality is also a driving force behind the Paris 2024 project. This includes putting the same effort into organizing the Paralympic Games as well as the Olympic Games. Equality can also be seen in the showing of women, with as many women as men competing, which is new in the Games’ history.
“The design of the torch stands for water, which looks like flowing water waves. And it seems to have a vibrating feeling, almost like it’s moving. Peace is shown by the gentleness of the curves (曲线). ” added the designer.
The Paris 2024 torch was made by ArcelorMittal, an official partner of Paris 2024. ArcelorMittal will produce 2,000 torches, at least five times fewer than in previous editions of the Games, in order to reduce the influence of production.
The torch which was poured with the wisdom and effort of French people was lit by the sunlight in Olympia, Greece, on April 16, 2024. After that, it has started a journey through 64 areas of France, including five overseas areas.
“Welcome to our new ‘classroom’!” said Chen Dong, one of the three astronauts of the Shenzhou XIV mission.
They were giving a science class 400 kilometers above Earth on October 12. It was the third space class from the Tiangong Space Station, but the first one from the Wentian lab module (实验舱) since its launch in July. The former two classes were held in the Tianhe core module (核心舱).
What does the new “classroom” look like? Chen, together with Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe, showed us around. “The beds in the Tianhe module are placed horizontally (横着), while our beds are kept upright,” said Liu. That means astronauts in the Wentian lab module need to sleep standing up! But as Liu explained, people don’t feel any difference because there’s no gravity (重力) in space. Astronauts can even sleep on the ceiling or upside down!
The astronauts also showed their “space farm”, where lettuce, wheat, thale cress (拟南芥) and rice are grown. “Take a picture!” “Send the picture!” Through a voice-controlled camera, Chen already sent a picture of the thale cress to scientists on Earth. Then he used scissors to cut a sample (样本). “I’ll put it into a fridge at-80℃and later give it lo scientists on Earth,” said Chen. Scientists will study how the environment of space affects the growth of plants.
“Can you see the water drops coming from the leaves? This is called ‘guttation’ (植物吐水现象).” said Liu, holding the well-grown rice. In space, the water drops are much bigger than those on Earth. So people can clearly see the guttation.
“We hope in the near future, we can harvest the food grown on our own,” said Chen. “Maybe one day, we can harvest food on the other planets like the moon or even Mars!”
Have you ever thought about living a zero waste lifestyle? Zero waste is a way of managing resources that focuses on reducing waste, protecting natural resources and stopping something bad from polluting the earth.
Lauren Singer started living a zero waste lifestyle in 2012 when she realized that her actions were actually against her values—caring for the planet. “I thought that caring was enough, but it turns out that my lifestyle was creating harm and contributing to the systems that I was actively talking about fighting against,” she said of her decision to create less waste.
So why is the zero waste lifestyle important? Living a zero waste lifestyle brings so many benefits that are worth considering:
For the environment:
By choosing to live a zero waste life, we have the power to reduce the bad influence of waste treatment methods such as landfills (垃圾填埋场), waste burning and ocean litter. This choice helps to protect the broken balance of ecosystems and our natural environment, so that we can help to build a healthier planet.
For people’s wallet:
A zero waste lifestyle requires us to be wise customers. For example, we should shop with a list or a reusable bag and buy local products in season. It is also about valuing what we have and finding creative ways to extend the life of our belongings. By reusing things, we not only save money in the long term but also reduce waste.
For the resources:
When we reduce unnecessary shopping and reuse materials, we play a role in protecting resources like energy, water and raw materials. It is a green way that makes sure we use what we need without running out of our limited resources. By acting like that, we try to make sure that enough resources are kept for future generations.
▲ :
By cutting waste sent to landfills and reducing production of goods using a large amount of energy, we are able to actively lower greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. The adoption of these environmentally friendly practices and the attention paid to waste reduction can make a lot of difference in our fight against climate change, which is seriously threatening our planet.
For our society:
The zero waste lifestyle has the power to bring social changes by increasing people’s awareness about waste management. It encourages a sense of responsibility and gives people the confidence to practice a new lifestyle. By spreading the message of waste reduction and environmental ideas, the lifestyle attracts others to join in.
In 2012, Lauren Singer started Trash for Tossers, a blog about her experience changing into zero waste living. Five years later, she founded Package Free, a shop full of products that support a green lifestyle. The products reduce packaging in their design and are made from materials that can either be reused, or recycled. “Anything to get closer to zero waste is making a difference. I hope more people can notice it.” Singer said.
Are you an “I person” or an “E person”? 71 They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” (内向) and “extroverted” (外向).
72 For example, when an introverted person is with a group of extroverted friends, he might become more social like an “E” person.
According to scientists, this idea of temporarily (临时地) changing personalities is called “masking”. 73 “Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the Master Class website.
Using the MBTI result to describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan. I thought of an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’. ” “Why?” she asked back. “Must I follow what my personality test tells me to do?” 74
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is—for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. 75
There were tubes (试管) all over my lab desk. Once again, my experiment had refused to work. I felt 76 (hope). A few months earlier, when I had just started the project, I was confident. “I 77 (succeed) if I work hard enough.” I encouraged myself. So I spent long hours in the lab every day. When the experiment failed, I 78 (simple) worked harder.
Yet here I was, working harder than ever—but not getting anywhere. I didn’t know what to do.
It was late in the evening. One other person was still in the lab, and he noticed my 79 (worry) face. He came over and asked how I was doing. “I 80 (try) thousands of times so far, but...” I told him about my problems. After we talked through the experiment, “I think it’s time to go home and get some sleep. Taking a break is also hard work, you know,” he said with a smile.
Those words opened my eyes. I no longer made 81 (me) work too hard in the lab. I felt less stressed and my research started to make progress.
One day, I 82 (drink) coffee at a cafe, when my professor came in. We discussed the habit of working too hard together. He said, “We need to work smarter, not 83 (hard).” I felt a little surprised. I had never heard my professor 84 (say) anything like this.
Our conversation that day helped me understand that exciting ideas can hardly come from a mind under pressure. My best ideas almost always 85 (come) when I have allowed my mind to relax—whether that’s cooking a nice dinner or going on long hikes with my brother. Part of working smarter, I realized, can be taking a break.
Today, I try to pass this idea on to my own students. Work-life balance is not a barrier to excellent research. It is an important part of it.
You might have a friend or a classmate who remembers every single detail. How can they make it? A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally and a bad memory as something that cannot be c 86 . However, in fact, there are plenty of things that you can do to improve your memory.
First of all, interest is important when remembering things. We all a 87 that we don’t have difficulty remembering the things we are interested in while we do have difficulty remembering the ones that we are bored with. It’s not h 88 to explain why schoolboys remember football results well, but remember dates from history lessons with difficulty! One way to “make” yourself have more interest is to ask questions—the more, the better!
Secondly, researchers have found that information which is organized in groups can be e 89 remembered. You can use this by organizing the materials you are studying. Try grouping similar knowledge together, or make a mind map of textbook reading to help group the information. Then when you learn more about that subject, you know that better. Be sure things are c 90 in your mind. If not, ask questions until you u 91 !
Moreover, when you’re learning new materials, you should spend the time thinking about the relationship between the present information and what you’ve already known instead of repeating w 92 thinking. Then it helps you remember information.
Last but not least, physical exercise is also important for your memory because it increases your heart rate and o 93 more oxygen to your brain, and that makes your memory work better. Exercise also reduce stress which is very h 94 to the memory.
So the next time you’re learning new information, you can use the methods a 95 . I’ m sure that you will improve your memory and get more out of it.
Young star shines
Over the years, Chinese players have been doing very well in table tennis. Now, young athletes from Generation Z (Z世代) are becoming the stars of the game.
Born in 2000, Sun Yingsha has been given the nickname (绰号) “Little Devil” by her fans. When she was little, Sun was sensitive (敏感的) to the sound of a table tennis ball hitting the ground. “I felt I had some talent,” she told China Daily. Becoming a world top player like her idol Zhang Yining has always been her dream.
However, there have been challenges along the way. She took part in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and it was there that she faced huge losses. “I was not well-rounded (全面的) enough to win the gold medal in the women’s singles (单人),” Sun said.
Sun believes that life is always full of ups and downs. “Courage and a strong mind can make a good athlete,” she said. “What keeps me going are the goals and dreams I set for myself.”
At the 2023 Singapore Smash, Sun won the women’s singles, the women’s doubles, and the mixed doubles, becoming the first athlete to get three gold medals at the tournament (锦标赛). During the fierce competitions on the table tennis court of the Paris Olympics in 2024, Sun attracted people’s attention with an amazing “leaping crash (跳跃扣杀)”.
When talking about younger table tennis players, Sun advises them to keep their love and stay focused (专注的). “If you truly love table tennis, I hope you can hold on to it,” she said.
